Graduate Consumer Protection Scholarship Winners
2020 Winner: LeeAnna Bowman-Carpio
Biography: LeeAnna Bowman-Carpio is a rising 2L at University of California, Hastings College of the Law and the first in her family to pursue a professional or graduate degree. Originally from Los Angeles, LeeAnna attended UCLA where she majored in Cultural Anthropology. After graduation, she had planned to attend law school but, due to a family crisis, had to postpone applying. Instead, she brought her qualitative and quantitative research skills to bear on her work as a research associate and grants project manager for UCLA’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute and the National Institute of Health’s Diversity Program Consortium. Working with biomedical and community health researchers at UCAL, she was drawn to the legal and ethical aspects of patient privacy issues and product safety. Finally, five years after graduation, LeeAnna followed her long-time dream of attending law school. LeeAnna is now pursuing a career in consumer protection and antitrust litigation. This semester, she will serve as a teaching assistant for Legal Research and Writing. She is also currently a staff editor for the school’s flagship Hastings Law Journal.
Reaction Statement: When I first heard that I had been awarded the Schlanger Law Group’s Consumer Protection Scholarship for Law/Graduate Students, I felt a mental and emotional weight lift from off my shoulders. Having had to take out substantial student loans for my first year of law school, this scholarship not only helps defray the costs of my legal education but also gives me greater peace of mind so that I can focus on what truly matters—exceling in my legal studies. The negative effect that concern over my financial future had on my ability to attend to my studies was palpable. And indeed, there is a growing literature on the negative effects of debt and general monetary concerns on cognitive and physical health. While this is a rather bleak reality, it is philanthropic actions such as those undertaken by the Schlanger Law Group that are critical to offsetting that burden and helping students succeed. I am incredibly thankful for this assistance and anticipate the time when I can pay it forward.
